What’s your favourite sign? Sign Language Week 2019
To raise awareness and celebrate Sign Language Week this year, we asked our team members to share their favourite BSL signs, words or phrases. Here are a few that were sent in.
“This is the sign for “fantastic/fabulous”. I use this frequently as it is an expression that demonstrates an achievement by others. In the Deaf community it is a way of saying fantastic or fabulous but it is actually pronounced verbally as ‘V’.”
“Definately, Actually, True, Really?…”
“This is my favourite sign as it can be used for so many different things. I also often use this when checking a clients understanding. Depending on what I am using the sign for, it can have many different facial expressions as well! It doesn’t always look so smiley as I am here!”
“I remember learning vocabulary when I started signing. Animal week was always a favourite! I really like signs that are so visual. ‘Turtle’ is a great sign, I love the thumbs which circle to represent the turtle’s flippers (if that’s what they’re called, I’m no turtle expert!).”
“Here’s my favourite sign – it is the sign for ‘trust’. It was the very first sign that I learned, and introduced me to British Sign Language. It took me a long time to understand the difference between this and signing similar words – ‘depend’ and ‘rely’.”
“Here’s my favourite sign at the moment. I have picked the sign ‘sun’ as it makes me smile – it’s a lovely iconic sign which can cheer you up on the cloudiest of days.”
“Spreading the love has always been an important part of my life. Everyone is deserving of love no matter what.”
“I love the sign for dogs because there my favourite animal, they’re very loyal and loving.”
